About IONA

IONA is building the infrastructure that makes the low sky useful. We enable safe, reliable, everyday drone operations that move people, goods and information faster than ground-based systems allow.

We design the aircraft, the software and the operating model that makes large-scale aerial operations possible. Our goal is simple: turn drones into a dependable part of national infrastructure.

Joining IONA means joining a team that moves fast, solves real problems and builds things that work in the world, not just on paper.

Role Purpose

This role designs and operates the web and cloud platform that powers our operator workflows, telemetry visualisation, mission planning and geospatial data services. You work across the stack, from Svelte front ends to Go microservices, Terraform modules and production infrastructure on GCP.

Your work directly impacts how teams plan missions, monitor flights and make decisions. You own systems that must be reliable, testable and auditable to support safety-critical operations at national scale.

This is a hands-on role with high ownership, strong cross-team collaboration and significant scope to shape how we build and run our platform.

What You Will Own

Web and Frontend

  • Implement responsive, testable Svelte front ends
  • Build reusable components and patterns for consistency and speed
  • Support accessibility and localisation as required
  • Write end to end tests and ensure reliability across devices

Backend and Data Services

  • Design and build Go microservices with clear API contracts
  • Implement authentication, versioning and schema migrations
  • Model and optimise geospatial data using PostgreSQL and PostGIS
  • Integrate telemetry, map tiles and mission data into the platform

Infrastructure and Tooling

  • Build and maintain Terraform modules for environments and services
  • Operate Linux based services on GCP and improve performance and security
  • Maintain CI and CD pipelines with automated tests and quality gates
  • Create dashboards, runbooks, design docs and other engineering artefacts

Collaboration

  • Work closely with data engineering, flight control and systems teams
  • Participate in code reviews, design reviews and post mortems
  • Help raise engineering standards and improve tooling across the team

About You

Experience and Skills

  • Three to five years building production web or cloud systems
  • Strong experience with Svelte or modern frontend frameworks and TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with Go and service oriented architectures
  • Skilled in Terraform and infrastructure as code practices
  • Comfortable with CI and CD pipelines and automated testing
  • Solid Linux administration experience
  • Experience with GCP compute, networking, IAM and managed SQL
  • Strong SQL skills and exposure to PostGIS and spatial queries
  • Confident producing clean, testable and well documented code

Nice to Have

  • Experience with telemetry, map visualisation or geospatial tooling
  • Familiarity with safety critical or regulated systems
  • Experience with message streaming technologies
  • Experience with geospatial libraries such as GDAL or Mapbox

How You Work

  • Make it happen: you take ownership of services end to end and solve problems without waiting for perfect instructions
  • Clarity builds speed: you write clear APIs, documentation and communication that reduce noise
  • Solve what matters: you focus on reliability, scalability and operational clarity
  • Speak up then commit: you challenge assumptions, contribute to direction and then move with the team
